Workpackages
NRPCES project activities has been divided into 7 Work Packages (WPs)
WP Leader: Luleå University of Technology (LTU)
Partners: Damill AB, Dosta Tec, FEUP, ISEP, LTU, MDU, Predge AB, Sirris
WP1 establishes the systematic framework necessary for the project to achieve its objectives while meeting cost, time, and quality requirements. Its main tasks include overall project management and coordination across work packages, as well as the operation of the administrative team. WP1 also involves coordination and control of the technical project activities according to WPs, the preparation of management and quality reports for the European Commission, the assurance of compliance with ethical standards. In addition, it manages communication with the Eureka Commission and ensures efficient information flow within the Consortium. Risk and conflict management are also key components, supporting smooth project execution and issue resolution.

WP2 is dedicated to developing a real-time, sustainability-focused maintenance monitoring system that identifies equipment breakdowns contributing to increased carbon emissions. The need is to identify the maintenance parts that characteristically exhibit a function-reduction pattern for emissions trending which could mean identifying the CO2e materials consumption via costs and/or physical measurements or energy consumption patterns or both using IoT devices. Since the WP is aiming for a real-time solution, trending the CO2e materials and energy consumption via costing computation algorithms is the IOT technology that needs to be implemented.
WP Leader: Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (FEUP)
Partners: Damill AB, Dosta Tec, FEUP, ISEP, LTU, MDU, Predge AB, Sirris
WP3 focuses on selecting key performance indicators (KPIs) that enable accurate environmental impact assessment and demonstrate the benefits of project activities, supporting justification for wider dissemination. The tasks will involve tracking the optimal replacement time for use-case machines by focusing on parameters such as energy consumption, environmental pollution parameters, profitability derived from the chosen KPIs. In addition, intensity metrics will be defined to improve understanding of efficiency, sustainability, and related benefits, enabling comparisons across factories and devices. Finally, the emission-related additional costs will be calculated, along with their relationship to the optimal replacement time of machinery.
WP Leader: Sirris
Partners: Damill AB, Dosta Tec, FEUP, ISEP, LTU, Predge AB, Sirris
WP4 aims to monitor the asset status and estimate railways remaining useful life. To achieve this, WP will investigate which techniques and best practices are already being used in industrial environments. In this context, a barrier/enabler analysis will then be conducted for the specific use cases to identify challenges and opportunities. Based on these findings, WP4 will develop modular techniques for remaining-life estimation, ensuring flexibility and applicability across a wide range of industrial environments.
WP Leader: Trafiksverket – Sweden
Partners: Damill AB, FEUP, ISEP, LTU, MDU, Predge AB, Sirris, Trafikverket
WP5 aims to derive probabilistic input data for the ERT decision support tools. The methodology to integrate RAMS with LCC is in line with the European standards on RAMS (EN 50126) and LCC analysis (EN 60300). After data collection associated to RAMS and LCC (seeWP2), RAMS analyses, RAMS simulations and the LCC assessment will be carried out in this WP.
WP Leader: Predge – Sweden
Partners: Damill AB, Dosta Tec, FEUP, ISEP, LTU, Predge AB, Sirris, Trafikverket
WP6 focuses on platform development, validation, and industrial demonstration. Its tasks involve visualisation and monitoring which will be used to extract valuable insights from the data and for predictive maintenance and aid the decision makers. Demonstrations will be conducted for each use case, along with validation and evaluation of the results against the specific requirements for each case.
WP Leader: Mälardalen University – Sweden
Partners: Damill AB, Dosta Tec, FEUP, ISEP, LTU, MDU, Predge AB, Sirris, Trafikverket
WP7 objective is to disseminate and exploit NRPCES results to industry, scientific community, public policy and related authorities. NRPCES results will be also promoted to a broader audience through social media, relevant magazines (e.g., IEEE Spectrum), and workshops (e.g., workshops co-located with annual international conference on sustainability for ICT -ICT4S and International workshops). The dissemination work will be performed in national and international venues related to promoting sustainable ICT as well as trade fairs and industrial events and exhibitions. Moreover, an online repository of short presentations will be developed as a basis for industrial and academic competence building.
